This week we went on our 6th annual field trip to Carkeek Park in North Seattle. We partnered with the Kang-O'Higgins Atelier for drawing on location and lunch. The park has something for everyone: trails, beach, forest and fields. The trip afforded us an opportunity to work outside and to enjoy some camaraderie. I found out that our artists are equally talented in the culinary and visual arts.
Working outside poses challenges for students who are used to working predominantly in the studio. The shifting light and abundance of visual stimulation forces the artist to improvise and simplify. Regardless of the difficulties of working outside many students did beautiful drawings. The hard work, sun, water, beach and lively companionship made for a perfect day. I know I am already looking forward to next year.
